Abstract
JUMIANTI PALIMBONG. 2024. The Impact of AI on English Learning Based on EFL Students’ Experience at UKI Toraja. (Supervised by Dr. Selvi Panggua, M.Pd and Dra. Rachel, M.Pd).
The aim of this research is to ascertain the impact experienced by students who have used AI in learning English, especially students of the English Education
study program at UKI Toraja.
The researcher conducted this investigation used qualitative method. Purposive sampling strategy was used to acquire data from seven (7) English language education students. Data collection was carried out using interview and observation techniques.
The research found that there were three types of artificial intelligence (AI) commonly used by students: chatbots, grammar checkers, and applications or language learning programs. There were some impacts felt by students who used AI to learn English. Applications like Duolingo and ELSA Speak improved listening and pronunciation skills, and also increased vocabulary mastery. Using grammar checkers like Grammarly and QuillBot could improve reading and writing skills as well as vocabulary mastery, with better grammar. A similar impact was experienced by chatbot users, such as ChatGPT. The use of AI can personalize students’ learning experiences according to their abilities and preferences; using AI can also increase student motivation and engagement level in learning English with the variety of features and facilities offered. Despite having a lot of positive impacts, the use of AI has been found to have the potential to lead to overdependence.
